On 3rd October, 2015, the Honorable Minister of Local Government and Housing, on behalf of the President of the Republic of Zambia, launched the National Cleaning Campaign Programme dubbed “Smart Zambia Campaign”. At this function he directed that all residents of Zambia, in various local authorities, will be required to participate in National Cleaning Activities. The cleaning activities will be taking place on the first Saturday of every month. The next national cleaning day is scheduled for 5th November, 2015.

This notice therefore serves to invite Lusaka residents, that is, households, churches/religious organisations, schools, business houses, and civil society organizations, to undertake cleaning activities in and around your premises. Further, institutions may identify communities where they can undertake the cleaning activities, and these may include but not limited to:

  1. Picking and disposal of litter.
  2. Cleaning of drains
  3. Painting of buildings

Once the waste is collected and placed in one place, the Lusaka City Council together with other stakeholders such as the private sector will collect such waste and transport it to the disposal site.

It must be emphasized that participation in these cleaning activities is a civic responsibility of everybody, and therefore the Lusaka City Council will not pay anybody any allowance for cleaning their communities. Further, residents are advised not to use this noble and well-intended day as a reason not to pay for their waste to authorized waste collectors.
