In a powerful testament to resilience and determination, a group of ten women has defied the odds, rising from financial hardships through poultry farming after securing a K24,000 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) grant in 2022.

Margret Simuyandi, Chairperson of the club, recounts how the journey began, with unwavering hope and a well-prepared business proposal presented to the Ward Development Committee (WDC).

Against stiff competition, the club based in Roma Ward 20 of Mandevu Constituency, emerged victorious, earning the grant that would breathe life into their ambitions.

With excitement and newfound resources, the group initially rented a chicken run and launched their venture with 200 birds, brimming with optimism.

However, the road was anything but smooth. Disease swept through their flock, devastating their numbers and leaving them with a mere 60 survivors. Adding to their struggles, two employed youths, entrusted with managing the poultry, failed to meet expectations, causing further setbacks.

Yet, in the face of adversity, giving up was never an option.

Determined to rewrite their fate, the women embraced resilience. They pivoted their operations, constructing a new chicken run utilising the Chairlady’s bare land, turning personal space into a beacon of hope. With renewed vigor, they expanded their flock, gradually increasing their numbers to between 200 and 300 birds per cycle, ensuring steady sales and a sustainable livelihood.

Today, their efforts are paying off, providing financial stability and better lives for their families. What began as a humble poultry project has evolved into a thriving business, demonstrating the power of persistence.

Grateful for the empowerment, the group expresses deep appreciation to the government for the CDF grant, which they say has transformed their lives and steered them away from poverty. But they are not stopping here, their sights are set on broader horizons.

With aspirations reaching beyond poultry, they now plan to venture into full-scale agriculture targeting maize farming, determined to further expand their dreams and economic opportunities
