The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has procured 10 new tractors at a cost of K14.8 million for solid waste management mechanisms in all seven constituencies of Lusaka.
Speaking when he inspected the tractors ahead of official handover, Ministry’s Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Nicholas Phiri, emphasised that despite this investment, recipient constituencies are expected to take care of the equipment.
Mr. Phiri stated that citizens also bear the responsibility of ensuring waste is deposited only in designated spaces to facilitate easier collection.
The Ministry will next invest in skip bins to provide waste disposal and collection points in all compounds, he added.
“The government is investing in proper solid waste management, but citizens need a change of mindset if solid waste management challenges are to be resolved,” Phiri said.
He said the tractors procured under the Cash for Work programme, will be managed by the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company.
He disclosed that some constituencies are likely to receive more than one tractor due to their large populations and waste generation rates to expedite wastes collection services.
He also called on stakeholders to collaborate with the council and contribute by donating cleaning materials, skip bins and other necessary resources.
Mr. Phiri further revealed that transforming the Chunga landfill into an engineered landfill has reached an advanced stage, with seven companies shortlisted and progressing to the second selection stage.
“Before the year ends, the public will be informed of the successful bidder,” he said.
The tractors are set to be officially handed over to Lusaka’s constituencies by Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Gift Sialubalo.
