The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has taken decisive action against illicit alcohol in the city, seizing hundreds of litres of assorted locally brewed beer, including red wine, Kachasu, and Tujilijili. This operation, conducted in collaboration with the State Police, targeted traders along Leopard’s Hill Road and State Lodge, as well as money mobile booth vendors selling illicit beverages.
The LCC’s efforts are focused on protecting residents from consuming uncertified and harmful beverages that can compromise their health. Unregulated brews pose serious health risks to consumers, and it is the Council’s responsibility to ensure that only safe and certified beverages are sold in the city.
The operation underscores the Council’s commitment to enforcing laws governing the Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2011 of the Laws of Zambia. This Act regulates the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages, protecting public health and safety. The LCC will continue to conduct massive inspections to ensure a conducive and well-regulated liquor industry.
The Council will intensify sensitization campaigns to educate traders and residents on the dangers of selling, distributing, and consuming illicit alcohol. We will also highlight the legal implications of involvement in the illicit alcohol trade. By working together, we can create a safer environment for all residents.
The LCC appeals to the public to report any instances of illicit alcohol sales to the authorities. We urge traders to adhere to the laws governing the liquor industry and to prioritize the health and safety of our residents.
The Council is committed to protecting public health and safety, and we will continue to take decisive action against those who flout the law.
