Her Worship, the Mayor of Lusaka, Ms. Chilando Chitangala, accompanied by the Chilenje Ward Councillor, Mr. Reuben Mwenya today visited Chilenje Market, which is currently undergoing rehabilitation funded by ICLEI Africa.
Prior to the commencement of the works, marketeers and traders actively participated in identifying priority areas for intervention. These included the improvement of the water reticulation system and the upgrading of drainage and waste management systems.
The rehabilitation of Chilenje Market stands as a demonstration of collaborative and community-led development, showcasing what can be achieved when local authorities, development partners and communities work together towards a shared vision.
The initiative underscores the importance of inclusive participation in improving public infrastructure and enhancing service delivery in market areas.
The Lusaka City Council remains committed to strengthening partnerships aimed at promoting sustainable urban development.
In collaboration with ICLEI Africa, the Council has already identified ten (10) additional markets earmarked to benefit from similar interventions.
The Council commends the marketeers for their ownership, cooperation, and commitment to creating cleaner, safer and more resilient market.
