Lusaka City Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the city of Nanjing, from the People’s Republic of China which is aimed at promoting the principle of peace, friendship and mutual benefit and for the purpose of enhancing mutual understanding, exchanges and cooperation based on the principle of “Friendly City Relationship.” The signed Memorandum of Understanding includes promotion of tourism and cultural exchanges, cooperation in science, technology and education and cooperation in economy and trade.

In the framework of the “Central-Local Cooperation Program” for cultural exchanges formulated by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, Nanjing and the City of Lusaka will conduct such cultural activities as sending art delegations to each other’s city and holding culture exhibitions in each other’s city. The two cities have also agreed to intensify their exchanges and cooperation in science; technology and education were the Municipality of Nanjing will provide scholarship for 1-2 personnel from Lusaka to pursue post-graduate education in Nanjing, China. The two cities shall also enhance economic and trade cooperation in areas of mutual interests.

Speaking during the signing ceremony Mayor of Nanjing, Mr. Mioa Ruilin said his city was elated to have signed an MoU with the City of Lusaka. Mr. Ruilin said Zambia had been an all weather friend of China dating back from the 70s; hence the signing of the MoU was a symbol of trust and love that the people of China and Zambia were one. The mayor said that the City of Nanjing would ensure that the agreed areas of cooperation were actualized.

And Lusaka Mayor Councillor George Nyendwa thanked the City of Nanjing for accepting the proposal to twin with Lusaka. The mayor Zambia and China had come a long way and that it was worthwhile to ensure that bilateral ties trickled to the grassroot levels. “The relationship between Zambia and China has been in existence from the 1960s even beyond and as a country we have benefited a lot from China literally in all areas of technical expertise such as construction, health, economic and entrepreneurship just to mention a few. Our desire to twin with your municipality your, worship is aimed at ensuring that the bilateral ties between the two countries trickled to the grassroot level,” he said.

Councillor Nyendwa said Zambia highly value and appreciate the contribution the People’s Republic of China has made to the welfare of Zambians and that the City of Lusaka thought it was in order to consolidate the built relationship even at the local level

“On behalf of the residents of Lusaka and Zambia at large I pledge to owner this MoU we have signed today. I wish to urge ourselves to be committed to the content contained herein if our plans to support each other are to succeed,” he said. Mayor Nyendwa thanked his counterpart for the cordial reception and called for continued communication and support of each other for the betterment of the local people.
